Downtown Atchison

The Downtown area represents the veritable heart of the community, both geographically and socially.

Atchison’s downtown area is unique among smaller Kansas cities. The area’s rich history offers a sense of heritage and the older buildings promote a feeling of reassurance and permanence not found in modern building practices.

The riverfront location helps to encourage tourism, while downtown’s centrality to the rest of the community supports the small-town atmosphere that so many larger cities are forever attempting to create.

The City has adopted policies and implemented programs that work to prioritize and incentivize the redevelopment of downtown Atchison as opposed to peripheral green field developments. Recent examples of this focus include a new downtown YMCA, a new downtown Holiday Inn Express, and many public investments in new street lighting, sidewalks, and street trees.

A downtown coordinator is also available to help you get involved in special events mutually benefiting to your business and downtown.

Lease Space Available Space is available for a variety of store fronts and office spaces, starting as low as $4/sq.ft per year. Various buildings and land sites are available for sale and development. For more information, contact ecodevo@cityofatchison.com.
